Solent Creatives provides student talent for industry. With self-employment being the norm in the media sector Mix Consulting worked with Southampton Solent University to set up an agency for under-graduates providing them with the opportunity to work on commercial assignments directly with clients.
An extensive part of the project was to recruit businesses through intermediary business groups backed up by social media. Mix also developed a range of practical tools for the students to download including How to Write a Brief, Keeping Safe and Managing your Assignment.
The project evolved to set up incubator space and Nicky Curtis continues to deliver business start up courses to media under-graduates.
Solent Creatives has won many awards for employability and continues to evolve with the support of an internal team.
Eco-Ernie a student recycling was developed to address the vast amount of student rubbish being left behind when students vacated their rentals at the end of the year often causing major distress to the local residents. Mix supported the development of a franchise pack to sell to other universities.
Southern Entrepreneurs/Eastleigh Borough Council
Southern Entrepreneurs is a membership group for SME’s in Hampshire it provides cost effective training and other services. Mix Consulting has conducted interviews to understand what members most valued from the service and this researched has enabled Eastleigh Borough Council to tailor their service further to client requirements.
Working with an internal department Mix Consulting helped the team to engage more effectively with employers.
Employer Learning Hubs
In 2002 developing employer hubs was innovative. The challenge was to bring together educational establishments, further and higher education and private training providers to provide training, skills development and business support that was employer led and not available through mainstream college funding or business support.
Mix developed and project managed the following hubs on behalf of the Skills Agency.
Composites Hub – Isle of Wight

Festival Place Basingstoke
Construction Hub – Isle of Wight
Cowes Marine Cluster – Isle of Wight Workforce Pooling
The Cowes Marine Cluster was established in 2003 to bring together SME’s within the marine sector. As independent small and micro businesses they lacked the commercial status to tender for large commercial projects. Mix Consulting worked with the businesses and prepared a skills audit thus giving them the opportunity to offer their collective skills for larger projects.
Retail Sector and Construction Sector – Advisory Role – Hampshire and Isle of Wight
Nicky Curtis worked in a consultancy capacity to develop a skills strategy for the retail and construction sector and project manage a diverse range of projects for adults and young people to encourage employment in these sectors.
